Project:
Unite for Sight: Buduburam Refugee Camp
Goals:
Valda and the Unite for Sight team went to Buduburam, the largest refugee camp in Ghana, to provide vision and other healthcare services to 75,000 residents of the camp.
Challenges:
Living and working conditions were very heard. There was no running water or electricity. The level of poverty was severe.
Approach:
We developed a mechanism to train local people to sustain the program when we left. We developed partnerships to work with ophthalmologists.
Results:
We provided desperately needed vision and health services, and we ultimately helped several local young people come to the USA to be educated as health care professionals.
